Digging in Your Heals

I saw you hanging your shoes by their laces
Tying each of them to the branches of the tree outside your home
All in sets of two
In pairs
Each pair, mismatched
Not one belonging to the other

And with this dream, clarity followed

That walking with two left feet is your cycle
Toe to toe with those you love is your game
A mile in your shoes, on repeat, is your punishment
And your best foot forward is no foot at all
But your cold feet make you weak and your cold heart is what breaks you
